Today’s meet-up, and date for the next one

I really enjoyed our meetup today, even though the attendees were somewhat depleted in number – I suspect they had (quite understandably) been put off by the fact that I live in the middle of nowhere! But on the bright side, we had lots of time to chat, drink tea and eat cake (we had carrot cake and lemon cake), which is clearly a key aspect of any social meet-up!

Also of course we discussed the SEV licence reapplications. Val, who couldn’t make today’s meeting, had done loads of research and drafted a fantastic letter giving her grounds for objecting to the King’s Club licence, and today we added some thoughts of our own. We’ve still got a bit more work to do on the letter itself but we will definitely get it to the council by the deadline on Thursday! We’d encourage individuals and other organisations to send their own objections as well.

We did feel a bit bad about meeting not actually in Harrogate, especially for those among us who don’t drive. But we thought the Sunday meetup was nice – it felt a bit more relaxed than an evening meetup as we didn’t feel so strung out from work, getting the kids to bed, etc. So next time we’re going to go for a weekend daytime, child-friendly meetup again, but this time in the town centre!

So, a date for your diary: Sunday, 26th February, from 10am, at Victus in Harrogate (they serve American pancakes until 11am – yum!). Children welcome.

Two Harrogate clubs apply to become Sex Entertainment Venues

Both Wild Cats on Oxford Street and Kings Club on Kings Road have applied to become Sex Entertainment Venues under the newly adopted legislation.  Harrogate Borough Council have invited the public to make comment, and the closing date for this is Thursday 26th January.

We will discuss this at our next meeting on Sunday 22nd January and then make a response to HBC so please email harrogatefeminists@gmail.com if you’d like to come along.

Another meeting

We met today and got lots of things decided.

Our International Women’s Day event is taking shape – if only in our heads at present! – and we’re now starting to invite exhibitors.

Oh and we have all looked at our report on the “feeling safe in public spaces” (or “street harassment”) survey so we’ve now put the whole report on this website (divided into chunks for convenience, so you can go straight to the bits you’re more interested in)

See new links on the site map on the left-hand side of this page!

Our next meeting is going to be on the evening of Monday, 10th Jan.

But not in the usual place! because we will be looking at the data from our street harrassment survey and want to make sure that all responses are completely anonymous.

If you would like to come, drop us an email and we’ll let you know whereabouts we are meeting.

Quick notes from Monday’s meeting

We had a really good meeting on Monday with lively discussion and lots of planning!

SEV legislation

Harrogate Borough Council Licensing Committee is going to hold a public meeting at the council offices at 5.30pm on 11th November, to discuss whether they will adopt the proposed SEV legislation locally. Incidentally, while writing this post tonight I saw that in their report they did note our suggested improvements to their draft policy, although they haven’t summarised the detailed arguments we’d produced in support of our suggestions. One of the lap-dancing clubs submitted their own response via their lawyers. All other responses the Licensing Committee received during the consultation period were in favour of adopting the new legislation, which is great news. Let’s hope they do decide to adopt it!

16 Days of Activism

We are supporting the following events during this year’s 16 Days of Activism:

  • Harrogate Soroptimists’ End Violence Against Women stall on Sat 27th November in Victoria Shopping centre (first floor, opposite Mothercare).
  • Leeds Reclaim the Night march on Saturday 4th December.
  • DoH communications campaign on Violence against Women and Children – aimed both at members of the public and at those working in healthcare.

International Women’s Day 2011

In 2011, we would like to hold our own event, A Celebration of Women, to mark International Women’s Day (8th March) in its centenary year – to take place in Harrogate, probably either on the Saturday before or the Saturday after. We’re working on the details! For interest, see here for events organised by other UK groups in previous years…

Also, we reckon we need to have a constitution and a bank account, as currently we have No Funds Whatsoever, which is a bit inconvenient when planning an event… so we are going to get this sorted soon.

Next meeting – 22nd November – see “Meetings” for more details.
