We met again at Hale’s Bar. This venue did not work out so well as last time. This time, as we arrived they were setting up enormous speakers ready for a Karaoke Night. We decided that having a feminism activist meeting in the midst of a Karaoke Night was probably not a good idea, and accordingly decamped after about half an hour. If you arrived late for the meeting hoping to find us there – sincere apologies, and we hope you at least enjoyed the karaoke.

But the rest of Harrogate appeared to be either (i) closed or (ii) full of very loud beery people – I know, shocker eh? So in the end we went round to Laura’s house where we discussed, debated and planned – our plans included:

  •  continue to network with other local organisations relevant to us
  •  collect more signatures for Harrogate council’s consultation on lap-dancing clubs
  •  organise events to coincide with Human Rights Day (10th December 2010) and International Women’s Day (8th March 2011)

Oh, and:

  • find a karaoke-free venue for next time!

What we’re about

We are a local human rights group taking action to promote equality between women and men.

We believe that equality between women and men benefits us all. In an equal society women and men are free to make choices without the pressure of gender stereotypes.

Through lap dancing, pornography and prostitution, women become objects for sale.

We are taking action to reassert the human rights of women.

Good News from OBJECT!

Job centres will no longer be advertising jobs in the sex industry “which could lead to exploitation” – including lap dancing.

According to OBJECT, in the public consultation which led to this decision, 99.2% of people were in favour of the ban.

DWP Equality Assessment

Announcement made on Woman’s Hour

This sends out a powerful message challenging the normalisation of the sex industry in the UK.

Sarah and I had a fantastic time at the UK Feminista summer school.  The speakers were very informative and thought provoking and we have returned full of ideas and enthusiasm to get things moving. So please come along to our next meeting this Thursday 5th August 7.30 at Hales bar and get involved in our new and exciting project to fight for women’s human rights!
